Redwood National and State Park

The trees in this forest are different, large, even gigantic, dwarfing all other creatures. A remainder from the ages of the dinosaurs they can reach up to heights of 100 meters and more, with diameters of seven meters, they resist fire and live for centuries. The Redwoods reproduce not only by seed but also using sprouting, thereby creating perfect clones of the parental tree forming family groups using the same root system. The roots are shallow, only three to four meters deep but up to 30 meters in diameter, forming a dense network, interweaving with the roots of other trees.

Does this not remind of a gigantic nervous system, with the trees like the nerve cells and a network of dendrites and synapses? What if this would not only be an assembly of trees forming a forest but a forest that consists of thousands of trees? What if the roots would be not only interwoven but also interconnected, exchanging messages, thoughts, even feelings? Well, that would be a story…
