Lava Beds National Monument

Volcanic eruptions have formed this scenery. Large terrains are covered with the black rocky remains of ancient lava streams. But the most fascinating scenery is subterranean. While the lava streams cooled down at the surface and solidified, the hot streams made of molten stone continued to flow down below. Pushing their way through the rocks the hot lava and the acid gases formed tubes like a gigantic sewage system. Today you can climb down into the abysses of the earth and walk the lava tubes.

The country is large, very large, and therefore the infrastructure cannot be the same like in densely populated Europe. So if your fuel gauge goes below half you better think of a refill. If not you might be in serious trouble stranding somewhere in the middle of nowhere in blazing heat (we were lucky this time). And help might be found in the smallest human dwelling.
